| Additional Information | The Women's suffrage movement began in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton formed the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) in 1869. The NWSA became the foremost organization lobbying for suffrage. The movement merged with other groups and achieved gradual progress at state and local levels until the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment: "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex." |
