"Fair Taxation or New Representation" was the slogan of the Movement for Economic Justice, formed by George Wiley in 1972 after stepping down from the National Welfare Rights Organization. Wiley was firmly dedicated to fighting for welfare rights for low income families, and although he was CEO of the NWRO, he believed a broader movement that would promote progressive taxation and redistribution would benefit all Americans dealing with high property taxes. Following Wiley's untimely death in August of 1973, the MEJ was dissolved.

Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th President of the United States and served in the role from 1869-1877. Grant was initially a soldier and became the Commanding General of the United States Army (known as the Union Army) during the Civil War. The Republican Party unanimously elected Grant as their presidential candidate after the war because of his exceptional leadership and advocacy to enforce civil rights for African freedmen. Grant was also an advocate for paying debts and reducing the national debt—which was, in fact, an overall result of his presidency.

Additional Information

Germany has a long history with beer; In fact, their stringent ‘purity law’ was in place for hundreds of years. The law originated with a 1516 order by Duke Wilheim of Bavaria that beer was to contain nothing but malted cereals, hops, and water. Later, natural yeast was also included.

Beck’s Brewery, formally known as Brauerei Beck & Co., was founded in 1873 by Lüder Rutenberg, Heinrich Beck and Thomas May in Bremen, West Germany. Beck adhered to this ‘purity law’ for both its exported and its domestic beer, and often features this aspect of its history in its advertising. According to the brewery, Beck’s beer contained only hops from Tettnag and Hallertau water from Geest-area springs and the reservoirs of the Harz mountains, and yeast cultivated by Beck’s brew masters. Dribeck Importers of Greenwich, Conn. began importing Beck’s beer in 1964, bringing 15,000 cases of the beverage into the United States. By 1985, they were bringing in more than 8 million cases of Beck’s beer. The company focused hard on developing their North American markets, and in 1999 invested 20 million dollars in a U.S. advertising campaign. Because market research showed that many American believed that the best foreign beer was made in Germany, advertising efforts highlighted the beer’s German heritage and history.

Domestic cats are believed to have descended from the Middle Eastern wildcat (Felis sylvestris). Domestication began around 12,000 years ago. Whereas dogs were domesticated earlier by nomadic people, cats became useful once people started settling down, when mice entered dwellings and threatened stored crops.

People have been depicting cats in art for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians viewed them as sacred, adorning tombs and used to represent divine beings. The Chinese admired cats for their stealth, and frequently painted them on the hunt. In the West however, cats became associated with witchcraft and devilry during the Middle Ages, and it was not until the 1600s that this perception changed.
