Gary Hart is a politician who served as a United States Senator from the state of Colorado from 1975-1987. The Colorado flag, blue and white with a red and yellow C, is the backdrop of this campaign. He ran for president in 1984, only to lose to Walter Mondale for the Democratic nomination. He ran again in 1988 but his ambitions were derailed when news broke of an extramarital affair. By May 1987, he had dropped out of the race, only to announce in December that he was back in the running. After a poor showing in the New Hampshire primary, he put his presidential aspirations to bed. During the Obama administration, he was Vice Chair of the Homeland Security Advisory Council from 2009-2011 and United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland from 2014-2017. He wrote books about foreign affairs and national security and wrote several novels under the pseudonym John Blackthorn.

Additional Information

Renowned World War II General Douglas MacArthur tried to get involved in the 1952 presidential election. MacArthur was the leading General in the Pacific during the Second World War and also led U.S. troops during the Korean War. He disagreed with how President Truman was handling the war effort and was relieved of duty for insubordination in 1951.

MacArthur attempted to influence the election by becoming a third-party spoiler candidate, but his campaign never gained much traction. He was only listed on seven state ballots and hoped to gather more write-in votes. Ultimately, he only received just over 17,000 votes total and had four other third-party candidates ahead of him. MacArthur ultimately did not play a large role in the election and did not swing the race in any substantial way.
