The Saint Paul Winter Carnival is a festival held in Saint Paul, Minnesota every January. The event began in 1885 when a New York reporter wrote a comment regarding the miserable winters and how uninhabitable it is for residents during that time. This comment offended the resident of Saint Paul who decided to throw a carnival in order to prove the reporter wrong. The Carnival became a recurring event and was held every few years between 1886 and 1941 until 1942, when the carnival became permanent. Events include snow and ice sculpting, art exhibits, puzzle contests, dogsled races, and parades, among other events. There is also a coronation ceremony during which a Royal Family is selected through their fraternal organizations.

In 1908, the Automobile Club of Buffalo hosted an automobile show at the Convention Hall in Buffalo, NY, from March 9th-14th. Thursday, March 12th was dubbed “Boulevard Day” as any proceeds raised were given to the fund for a boulevard connecting Buffalo, Tonawanda, and Niagara Falls. Admission was 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for children for most of the auto show, however, it was fixed at $1 for Boulevard Day, which brought in around $800 in funds for Niagara Falls Boulevard.

In 1908, there was no safe road for bikes, horses or carriages, and automobiles between Buffalo and Niagara Falls, though one could go by rail or by trolley. The Automotive Club of Buffalo assumed $500,000 would be needed at the time to secure that a 200-foot-wide boulevard could be built. They recognized that Niagara Falls was a busy tourist attraction and as automobiles became more prevalent, a new road would be necessary. They were looking into available options, including petitioning the state legislature to fund and maintain the boulevard. Niagara Falls Boulevard was completed in 1913 by Constantine Construction Company. It was made completely out of brick and spanned from Tonawanda to Niagara Falls. All the original bricks were removed in the 1990's with advances in construction and Niagara Falls Boulevard is still in use today.

National Goof-Off Week is a title and concept that has many different meanings. The week during the baseball World Series has been referred to as National Goof-Off Week, as well as the week between Christmas and New Year’s. In 1973, the term appeared as a copyrighted phrase by the Hallmark Company.

The phrase, Hallmark holiday, was coined due to the commercialization and monetization resulting from the popularity of small scale events. When the corporation effectively creates a "holiday" by merchandising on a little-known trend or local holiday, many consider that event as something the company created rather than brought to new popularity of a wide-scale audience.

Additional Information

Indianapolis is a city in the center of the state of Indiana and also the state capital. As of 2020, it's population was 977, 642. The capitol building, or statehouse, is the fifth building to house the state legistation and was established here in 1888. While the state was originally inhabited by Native Americans as early as 10,000 B.C., the tribes relinquished the land in that area with the Treaty of St. Mary's in 1818. Indianapolis served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, which led the city to have one of the largest black populations in the Northern States, until the Great Migration. The Indiana Ku Klux Klan, led by Stephenson, became an influential organization in Indianapolis from 1921 through 1928, with ties to many of the city's governing boards.During this time, more than 40% of native-born white males in Indianapolis claimed membership in the Klan. Following the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., Robert F. Kennedy delivered a notable speech while on the campaign trail in 1968. While Kennedy gathered in the ghetto of Indianapolis to a crowd waiting for a speech about political values and goals, Kennedy instead delivered news of King's death to many who had not yet heard the news and spoke about the need for peace, a speech which is now highly regarded. Demographics in the city have changed over the years with current standings as of 2020 as 61 percent white, 29 percent African-American/black and the remaining other. Former Vice President Mike Pence presided over and resides in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis' most notable recreational attraction is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, located in the suburb of Speedway approximately six miles west of downtown Indy. This location, the largest sports venue in the world, is the home of well-known motor races the Indianapolis 500, the Brickyard 400, and formerly the home of the United States Grand Prix. At the Speedway, there is a museum that houses the Hall of Fame for racing, serving around 1 million guests annually, making it a well-traveled tourist destination in the midwest.

The soapbox derby has a long history, dating back to the 1930's. Children of all ages can compete and usually enter the races with their own homemade soapbox car. There are several qualifying events that are held throughout the country. Winners of these events compete for the national title in Akron, Ohio.

One of these qualifying events took place in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania in 1969. Bob Javens won this race and went on to race in Akron in the same year. The box cart that he won with is fondly remembered by the town. So much so, that the cart was placed in the Beaver Falls Museum where it is still on display, fully intact.
