Dinosaurs was an American comedy series that aired from 1991 to 1994. The show was the brainchild of Jim Henson and followed a family of dinosaurs, the Sinclairs (named after the fossil fuel corporation).

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)  is a federal government agency of the United States, founded in 1958. It is the successor of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) before the U.S. government shifted its focus on space, leading to the space race during the 1960s. NASA had led numerous space expeditions, robotic explorations, and moon landings, most notable the Apollo moon landings. Nearly 50 years after our last visit to the moon, NASA continues advancing space science through its involvement with the International Space Station and other innovative projects.

The famous picture seen here by photographer Arther Sasse shows Albert Einstein on his 72nd birthday in 1951, sticking his tongue out. It depicts the physicist in a lighthearted manner and became one of Einstein’s personal favorites.

Einstein developed his special theory of relativity based on his research into the connections between space and time. His theories around relatively and space/time challenged scientists and "common sense". In response, Einstein pointed out that common sense was nothing more than a bunch of prejudices laid down in our minds prior to the age of eighteen. He also went on to say that common sense needs constant reappraisal.

Created in 1980, the Dark Phoenix is the overly powerful and essentially evil version of X-Men superhero Jean Grey. The character first appeared in the “Dark Phoenix Saga,” a popular and beloved arc in Uncanny X-Men’s run.

During a mission in space, Jean exposes herself to a deadly solar flare to save the rest of the X-Men. This sacrifice results in her death and eventual rebirth as the Phoenix, a significantly more powerful version of herself. When a villain called Mastermind tries to manipulate and control Phoenix, it backfires, and results in the awakening of the Dark Phoenix, turning Jean into a nearly unstoppable supervillain. While the X-Men and others try to subdue her, the only person able to stop Jean is herself. In another sacrificial act, Jeans ends her own life, knowing her power would eventually consume her and those she loved.

During her time as Dark Phoenix, Jean killed billions, making it difficult for Marvel to resurrect the character as one of the heroes of the team. The writers chose to rectify this issue by writing a story that revealed that Jean was actually overtaken by an entirely different entity named Phoenix when she committed these atrocities, ridding her of all guilt.

Additional Information

Cocteau Twins were an alternative rock group formed in Scotland in 1979. They received critical and popular acclaim throughout their career, often referenced as one of the bands defining the genres of dream pop and shoegaze.

This button bears the band's name along with a hazy photograph characteristic of their album covers. Cocteau Twins were a musical enigma, with lead singer Elizabeth Fraser famous for her unintelligible, meaningless lyrics. This mystery only increased the allure of the band, which broke up in 1997 and has vowed to never perform again.

Additional Information

AFSCME, American Federation of State, Country, and Municipal Employees, is the largest trade union of public employees in the United States. Formed in 1932 by Wisconsin workers who feared they would lose their jobs due to lack of patronage in the Great Depression, the individuals created a "professional civil service" agency to advocate for the group. Throughout the years, AFSCME has organized lobbying and demonstrations in political arenas.

In 2018, Janus v. AFSCME was heard as a Supreme Court case. The case was in regards to a prominent labor law that determined union fees in the public sector violate the first amendment. This decision required public-sector unions to offer their services to members without requiring them to pay fees and dues.
