Looney Tunes began as animated short films from Warner Brothers in the 1930s. Cartoonist and animator Chuck Jones began working on the existing entity under the director of Warner’s animation team in 1935, and over the years Jones expanded on characters like Bugs Bunny and Porky Pig, while creating all new characters such as Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, both debuting in 1949. Wile E. Coyote was a self-proclaimed super genius, known for trying to come up with traps–often involving explosives–to capture the elusive roadrunner, with humorously disastrous (for himself) results. The button promoting Wile E. Coyote for President is one of several presidential campaign buttons, including for the characters Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

“We are hikers, not pikers” was a phrase coined by “General” Rosalie Jones during the women’s suffrage movement in the United States in the early twentieth century. In 1912, she led a group of over two hundred marchers 170 miles from Manhattan to Albany to meet with then New York Governor William Sulzer. The “hikers” held meetings throughout the route and the march was covered by many reporters, garnering attention for the women’s suffrage movement.

By the end of her film career, she had starred in 14 short films, 43 feature films, and over 25 storybook movies. Many of Temple’s films were released during The Great Depression, and the young girl’s bright personality brought positivity to Americans experiencing economic hardship.

Later in life, Temple left the film industry to pursue a career in politics and diplomacy. After an unsuccessful run for Congress, she was appointed to the U.S. delegation for the United Nations’ General Assembly and went on to serve as an ambassador to Ghana and the former Czechoslovakia.

Additional Information

The phrase “I’ll be loving you” is often used in songs in which singers express their love and devotion to someone. Such declarations in music can be interpreted as romantic, or about deep friendship or familial bonds. There are many more interpretations of the phrase, just as there are also different types of love. The ancient Greeks identified eight different types of love, while another popular theory known as Robert Sternberg’s Triangular Theory of Love proposes that there are three components of love that can be combined in various ways to create eight types of love ranging from nonlove (a lack of love) to consummate love (an ideal type of love).

“I Used To Be Snow White, But I Drifted” is a quote that is believed to have been popularized by the actress Mae West. The quote is used to convey the idea that the speaker used to be pure and good hearted, like the character Snow White, but they somehow drifted from that path.

Born in 1893, Mae West was considered to be one of the original blonde bombshells of the silver screen. In addition to her decades-long career on Broadway and in film, West was known for being a sharp writer. She penned some of her own plays and scripts, including the script for the movie She Done Him Wrong, a film that includes another iconic West quote, “Why don’t you come up some time and see me.”
