There are high schools named Marcus Garvey Academy in Detroit, MI, Cleveland, OH, and Los Angeles, CA, though it is unclear for which this button is representative. These schools' namesake, Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Jr. (1887-1940), was a Jamaican political leader, orator, writer, publisher, and entrepreneur. His principal area of focus was Pan-Africanism, the idea that all people of African descent should unite to better their situations around the world. With this goal in mind, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). He also founded the Black Star Line, which, in theory if not in practice, was a fleet of ships intended to help Africans in the worldwide diaspora return to their ancestral continent.

Lane Technical College Prep High School located in Chicago, Illinois, was founded in 1908. Lane Tech is one of nine selective enrollment schools, requiring all applicants to pass entrance exams before attending the school. The campus has an enrollment of just over 4,000 students, grades 7-12. Lane Tech's colors are green and gold, and their mascot is the Indians (which has been much debated in recent years, but still remains unchanged).

This button depicts the American flag beside the flag for Chicago. It is most likely part of Lane Tech's celebration of the diverse student body, perhaps used during the International Days festivities or one of many ethnic clubs on campus.

Iowa State College was the former name of the Iowa State University of Science and Technology, more commonly known as Iowa State University, Iowa State, or ISU.

The school was founded in 1858 and was a coeducation college from its inception. Iowa State became the nation’s first designated land-grant institution after the state accpeted the 1862 Morrill Act, a bill introduced by Justin Morrill and signed into law by Abraham Lincoln to promote and fund agricutural and industrial colleges by granting them lands. The state of Iowa was the first to accept the terms of the Morrill Act which provided the funding needed for the State Agricultural College and Model Farm, the predecessor of the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (1898–1959) and the Iowa State University of Science and Technology today.
