Created by New Zealand artist Kim Casali in the 1960s, "Love is..." comics were little love-type notes for her then fiancé Roberto Casali. The cartoons are one frame, drawn in black and white with “Love Is “ in the upper left corner, and then a drawing with the sentiment underneath. The couple in the comic are nude and the woman always has light long hair and the man has short dark hair. They are seen doing things together, being happy, thinking of each other when apart, and just being in love.

The comic strip was first published in 1970. Each one is individual, there is no series or continuation. In 1972, the most popular of the comics appeared: "Love Is...being able to say you are sorry" and was marketed internationally. Today, the comic strip is distributed through Tribune Media Services.

Additional Information

George McGovern is an American politician who ran a presidential campaign in 1972 representing the Democratic Party. His campaign advocated putting an end to the Vietnam War and developing a program of liberal social and economic reforms at home. His presidential campaign ended up unsuccessfully as he was insufficient in unifying the party and lost to incumbent Richard M. Nixon, who won by a landslide. Before his 1972 presidential campaign, McGovern earned the Distinguished Flying Cross as a WWII pilot, taught at Dakota Wesleyan University in South Dakota, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1957 to 1961, served as the director of the Food and Peace Program under President John F. Kennedy, and served in the U.S. Senate for two terms in 1962 and 1968. McGovern also wrote a few books, including his 1977 autobiography Grassroots.

Richard Nixon ran for president in 1968, nominating Spiro Agnew as his running mate. Nixon had first been Vice President under Dwight D. Eisenhower, and had been preparing to run for the presidency for a second time after losing the 1960 election. In 1968 Nixon ran as a Republican against Democratic Hubert Humphrey, and promised voters that he would bring law and order back to the country and would help minorities start small businesses. He won by a small margin, with 43% of the votes, and was inaugurated as 37th President of the United States.

Taco Bell is one of the American fast-food restaurants serving Mexican-style foods founded by Glen Bell in 1962. The chain expanded where the 100th restaurant opened in 1967 and became open to the public with 325 restaurants in 1970. In 1978, PepsiCo purchased Taco Bell and spun out Taco Bell in late 1997 in Tricon Global Restaurants, which later became known as Yum! Brands. In a competitive fast food chain industry, the majority of restaurants serve burgers, rather than tacos. Taco Bell highlights their non-burger fast food offerings in an attempt to encourage more diners to visit their restaurants.
