St. John Bosco (1815-1888), or “Don Bosco,” was a Roman Catholic priest who founded the Salesian order. His work focused on helping impoverished young men and boys who moved to his town of Turin, Italy in search of employment. Working in the context of the Industrial Revolution, Don Bosco provided housing and education for these young men in an environment that only valued their cheap labor. Across the United States, there are dozens of schools named for John Bosco because of the saint’s interest in education. This button was likely created to promote one of these schools.

The Borough of Beaver Pennsylvania is located in Beaver County about 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh and sits at the confluence of the Ohio River and the Beaver River. Officially formalized in 1802, the area was in use long before that by indigenous people including the Shawnee and later the Delaware. Beaver is also the home of Fort McIntosh, the Continental Army’s first fort built north of the Ohio River. Fort McIntosh played a crucial role in America’s fight for independence, serving as the Continental Army’s western headquarters.

The American Medical Association (AMA) was founded in 1847 and strives to promote the art and science of medicine and improve the quality of public health. In 2017, AMA advocated for health care reform to improve the quality of public health, medical ethics, scientific evidence, and long-standing policies adopted by representatives from over 190 physician organizations. The Affordable Care Act supported millions of Americans in health insurance coverage, and it has been a top priority of the AMA for a long time. AMA is now committing to the Affordable Care Act reform to address its issues and find ways to improve them. As the AMA strives to improve public health, their efforts in advocating for health care reform proposals are an essential part of their mission.
