An American historian and author, George McGovern was one of the first politicians to speak out publicly against America's growing involvement in Vietnam. His platform during the 1972 presidential campaign included a comprehensive plan to end the war in Vietnam, a substantial cut in federal defense spending, and a "demogrant" program—which sought to replace inflated welfare bureaucracies with a pledge to give every American citizen $1,000. McGovern's "demogrant" program was dropped from his platform in August of that year after it was severely criticized as a "liberal giveaway." Although McGovern captured the votes of activists and reform liberals, his opponent, Republican incumbent Richard Nixon, managed to defeat McGovern in one of the biggest landslides in American history.

Additional Information

Despite being a sitting president, the 1976 was Gerald Ford's first presidential campaign. In 1973, then-president Nixon appointed Ford as the vice president under the terms of the 25th Amendment when Spiro Agnew stepped down. Agnew's resignation was soon followed by Nixon's which enabled Gerald Ford to become the 38th President of the United States.

Ford had anticipated retiring from politics after his vice presidential term was over and therefore had to be convinced to enter the 1976 presidential election campaign. He won the nomination of the Republican party over former Governor of California Ronald Reagan. Bob Dole was chosen as a running mate to satisfy the more conservative members of the party. While President Ford’s campaign received increased press coverage due to him presiding over numerous bicentennial events, the Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter won the election with 50.1% of the popular vote and 297 electoral votes compared to Ford’s 48% of the popular vote and 240 electoral votes.

Additional Information

This humorous slogan references three famous movie characters who had some iteration of father issues. The verbs and pronouns change with each character’s relationship to a father, contrasting the characters and drawing light to their situations.

Inigo Montoya is a character from William Goldman’s 1973 novel The Princess Bride. The button displays one of the character’s most famous quotes and uses its format for two other well known characters. Lamont Cranston is the alter ego of the titular character of the popular radio show “The Shadow,” which first debuted in 1930. This character would later be an influence for the creators of Batman, with Lamont Cranston and the Shadow as the inspiration for Bruce Wayne and the Batman. The bottom third of the button references the scene in the 1980 Star Wars film The Empire Strikes Back in which Darth Vader reveals to Luke Skywalker that he did not kill his father. In a shocking and now famous twist, Darth Vader tells Luke “I am your father,” Anakin Skywalker.
