Wendy's is an American fast-food chain founded in 1969 by Dave Thomas. The first Wendy's restaurant opened in Columbus, Ohio. Over the course of 60 years, the Wendy's restaurant company quickly grew to more than 5,000 restaurants across the nation. Today, it is an international American restaurant. Wendy's is known for its square beef hamburger patties and its iconic Frosty dessert. Since the 1980s, Wendy's has expanded their menu items to include grilled chicken sandwiches, salads, baked potatoes, chili, breakfast options, and much more. The restaurant was named after founder Dave Thomas's daughter, Melinda, who went by the nickname Wendy.

Thomas was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and adopted before the age of one. He worked as a cook throughout his early career before venturing into fast food in the late 1960s. Thomas spent his adult life advocating for foster care. In the 1990s, Wendy's embraced adoption as its national charitable cause, raising millions of dollars. In 1992, the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption was established. Dave Thomas died at the age of 69 in January, 2002. The Wendy's company has carried on the legacy of Thomas through its commitment to philanthropy.

Pictured in this ad is American comedian Jonathan Winters, known for his roles in TV shows such as Mork & Mindy and The Smurfs, as well as movies such as It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World.

“Star Trek Lives!” is a fan slogan for the popular science fiction TV series Star Trek. Star Trek fans, also known as Trekkies, use the phrase to express optimism about the show’s continued staying power in popular culture. The slogan leant its name to a series of fan conventions held in New York City from 1972-1976. The first of those conventions advertised legendary science fiction writer Isaac Asimov as a guest speaker. “Star Trek Lives!” is also the title of a book published in 1975, which documents fan activities such as fan fiction and conventions.

The Oxnard Salsa Festival is an annual event started in 1993 that takes place in Oxnard, California. Attractions include a salsa tasting tent, salsa recipe contest, international foods, craft and retail vendors, festival souvenirs, a kid zone, and Dancing with our Community Stars. Around six different salsa bands play at the festival with the setup including a main stage, a small dance floor, and a large seating area.

One of the main attractions of the festival is the charity fundraiser, Dancing with our Community Stars. The fundraiser is a salsa dance contest similar to the TV show Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Competitors pair with the best local salsa instructors and dance to raise funds for their charity of choice. The chosen pairs have nine weeks to rehearse in preparation of the competition where they will face a panel of judges. Spectators can “vote” for their favorite dancers by making donations before and during the event. One dollar equals one vote. Since this fundraising contest began, more than four hundred thousand dollars has been raised for charity.

AVIA Hotels launched in 2007 as a boutique hotel collection with four locations: AVIA Savannah (GA), AVIA Napa (CA), AVIA Long Beach (CA), and AVIA The Woodlands (TX) by LodgeWorks L.P. Staff at AVIA hotels represented hosts of the hotel and surrounding localities. They started PALETTE e-zine with its inaugural winter issue in November 2010 to be published three times annually. It featured cooking and drink recipes, offers for AVIA subscribers, shopping, and unique qualities of all AVIA Hotel locations. Only two e-zines were published because Hyatt Hotels acquired 24 hotels from LodgeWorks L.P., including AVIA Hotels, in July 2011, and the magazine was discontinued.

Black and white yin yang symbol with a black border along the edge.

Additional Information

The yin-yang is a symbol dating back to ancient China and was a dominant concept across many Chinese schools of thought. Originally written as separate characters, the first known documentation comes from Oracle Bones, bones and remains of certain animals, most notably tortoise shells, used for divination during the Shang Dynasty in the 14th century BCE. At that time, the characters for yin and yang referred to natural phenomenon, such as the movement of the sun and the phases of the moon. Yin referred to darkness, stillness, and rest, while yang referred to daylight, movement, and work. No one knows the origin of the current popular symbol, but it has come to reflect life and the balance of good and bad. The symbol shows interconnectedness and co-dependence. One cannot exist without the other, for within the light, there is darkness and within the dark, there is light.
