In 1968, Black Student Union members from the University of Delaware occupied the Student Center for two days. These students demanded the university address their increased feelings of isolation in an overwhelmingly white campus. Having no official place for congregation, students, faculty, and staff began to meet in a randomly selected campus building. The students renamed the building Ujamaa House, but continued to lobby for a cultural center. Finally, in 1975, the Minority Center was created to support student development; it would later be renamed the Center for Black Culture. Later, the first Black Arts Festivals on campus would be held in this building.

Dwight Twilley, born June 6, 1951, is a power pop singer popular in the 1970s. He had two hit singles: "I’m on Fire" and "Girls." He released the first one while still part Dwight Twilley Band, while his second was released after he went solo. Power pop was extremely popular in the 1970s and was inspired by bands such as The Beatles, The Kinks, and the early Who.

Twilley Power is most likely a reference to both the Power Pop music genre and Flower Power. Flower Power is a non-violent ideology that started in the 1960s as a response to the Vietnam war. Allen Ginsberg, a beat poet, came up with the expression, and it inspired peaceful “hippy” protestors to use flowers to transform protests in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention has been held annually in Santa Barbara, California, since the early 1970s. Due to violence at music festivals like Altamont in 1969, large outdoor events had been banned in the San Francisco Bay area and Los Angeles County. The Topanga Canyon Banjo/Fiddle Contest from Los Angeles needed a location and contacted the Art & Lecture department at UC Santa Barbara. After many meetings and convincing from local music professors and community members, the event was permitted to happen on campus. The following year the ban was lifted, and the contest returned to Los Angeles. The music festival was a huge success, so in 1972, The Old Time Fiddlers’ Convention in Santa Barbara began.

Star Trek Lives! was an early and influential series of Star Trek conventions held in New York in 1972-1976. These cons were created by "a small group of die-hard fans" who felt displaced by the mainstream science fiction convention hosts and programming. The first convention was held January 21-23, 1972, at the Statler Hilton and featured guests Gene Roddenberry, Majel Barrett, Isaac Asimov, Hal Clement and D.C. Fontana. The convention also offered an art show, a costume call, NASA space displays (moon rocks and an astronaut suit), and a hospitality room. Episodes from the television show were screened from 16mm prints, including the original pilot The Cage and a blooper reel. Devra Langsam, a member of "The Committee", wrote about this con extensively in Star Trek Convention.

The phrase "Star Trek Lives!" was used on the flyers advertising the first convention in 1972 and was part of the Star Trek revival campaign undertaken by fans in the early 1970s.

The Oxnard Salsa Festival is an annual event started in 1993 that takes place in Oxnard, California. Attractions include a salsa tasting tent, salsa recipe contest, international foods, craft and retail vendors, festival souvenirs, a kid zone, and Dancing with our Community Stars. Around six different salsa bands play at the festival with the setup including a main stage, a small dance floor, and a large seating area.

One of the main attractions of the festival is the charity fundraiser, Dancing with our Community Stars. The fundraiser is a salsa dance contest similar to the TV show Dancing with the Stars on ABC. Competitors pair with the best local salsa instructors and dance to raise funds for their charity of choice. The chosen pairs have nine weeks to rehearse in preparation of the competition where they will face a panel of judges. Spectators can “vote” for their favorite dancers by making donations before and during the event. One dollar equals one vote. Since this fundraising contest began, more than four hundred thousand dollars has been raised for charity.

AVIA Hotels launched in 2007 as a boutique hotel collection with four locations: AVIA Savannah (GA), AVIA Napa (CA), AVIA Long Beach (CA), and AVIA The Woodlands (TX) by LodgeWorks L.P. Staff at AVIA hotels represented hosts of the hotel and surrounding localities. They started PALETTE e-zine with its inaugural winter issue in November 2010 to be published three times annually. It featured cooking and drink recipes, offers for AVIA subscribers, shopping, and unique qualities of all AVIA Hotel locations. Only two e-zines were published because Hyatt Hotels acquired 24 hotels from LodgeWorks L.P., including AVIA Hotels, in July 2011, and the magazine was discontinued.
