Additional Information

The yin-yang is a symbol dating back to ancient China and was a dominant concept across many Chinese schools of thought. Originally written as separate characters, the first known documentation comes from Oracle Bones, bones and remains of certain animals, most notably tortoise shells, used for divination during the Shang Dynasty in the 14th century BCE. At that time, the characters for yin and yang referred to natural phenomenon, such as the movement of the sun and the phases of the moon. Yin referred to darkness, stillness, and rest, while yang referred to daylight, movement, and work. No one knows the origin of the current popular symbol, but it has come to reflect life and the balance of good and bad. The symbol shows interconnectedness and co-dependence. One cannot exist without the other, for within the light, there is darkness and within the dark, there is light.

Green Friday was developed as a counterpoint to Black Friday: the day after American Thanksgiving, which is considered to be one of the busiest shopping days of the year. Large retailers put items on massive discounts to encourage to visit and shop. The Green Friday movement—formed in 2015—encourages people to think differently about how they shop that day, and focuses on shopping mindfully and sustainably.

Additional Information

William Warren "Bill" Scranton was an American Republican politician. He ran a successful campaign for Congress in 1960 resulting in a three-year term. He then went on to be Governor of Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1967. William Scranton was born in 1917 in Madison, Connecticut, to a wealthy family, descendants of the Mayflower colonists and founders of Scranton, Pennsylvania. Scranton studied law at Yale University before joining the Army Air Corps as a pilot. While in Congress, he voted alongside Democrats on issues such as foreign aid and civil rights. During his time as Governor, Scranton created a state community college system, a state Board of Education, and a Higher Education Assistance Agency. He brought unemployment down, increased sales tax to subdue a deficit, and promoted state trade nationally and abroad. Although he could not run for re-election in 1966, Scranton helped write a new Constitution that allowed governors a second term. Although he vowed to never run for public office again, he remained active in politics. He worked in private business from banking to broadcasting, served on various boards such as IBM and Sun Oil Company, was a trustee of Yale University, and chairman of the Commission on Student Unrest during the Kent State shootings in 1970, among many other endeavors. He served as director and vice president of various companies and organizations and continued his involvement in many civic activities. William Scranton died in 2013 in Santa Barbara, California at the age of 96.

Additional Information

A hanging chad is a fragment from a punch-card ballot paper which has not detached fully, resulting in an incomplete and therefore invalid ballot paper. Punch-card voting machines require voters to punch holes in their ballot papers in order to indicate their voting preferences. The small discarded fragment of paper is called a “chad”. "Hanging chads" result when ballot papers are not completely punched through and the small piece of paper or card prevents the ballot paper from being marked down as a definite vote for a particular candidate.

Hanging chads were partly responsible for the unusually high proportion of invalid votes recorded in Florida during the 2000 US Presidential election. As Chads weren’t completely punched through, many ballot papers recorded people voting for fewer than the minimum number of candidates required. The US invested heavily in electronic voting methods such as voting machines since this time to prevent further errors of this nature.

The game hangman is played between two or more people. One person thinks of a word to be written in and the other person(s) guesses letter by letter to fill in the word. If a person guesses correctly, the letter is filled in the blank. If a person guesses incorrectly, a portion of the hangman's body is drawn. When a complete man is drawn, the game is over and the person who thought of the initial word has won. When a word is fully writte, the game is over and the person who guessed has won.

This appears to be a campaign for a local school election candidate named Chad using a play on the phrase hanging chad, the game hangman/game over icon, and the phrase "Don't Leave Me Hanging" which implies actions should be taken to help someone.
