Additional Information

Washington, D.C. is the capital city and federal district of the U.S., situated along the Potomac River and bordered by Maryland and Virginia. This federal district is a vital component under the U.S. Constitution, being home to the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of government. The city was founded in 1791, and the first congressional session was held in 1800.

Washington, D.C. is not part of any state and does not have statehood status, meaning it does not have voting representation in Congress. However, the population of the city is around 690,000 according to a 2020 census, which is larger than the populations of Wyoming and Vermont. Because of the city’s prominence, there have been efforts to give it statehood since the 1880s, and even a recent bill was passed by the House of Representatives in 2021.

Roger Wagner was the director of the famous Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1964 until 1986. Wagner first introduced the Chorale's so-called "Messiah sing-alongs" in 1980. Now a Master Chorale holiday tradition, Messiah sing-along concerts are performances of the famous Handel piece in which attendees are encouraged to participate.

Wagner continued to conduct the Master Chorale's Messiah sing-alongs through 1985, before the Chorale's board dismissed him. For the next two years, Wagner arranged his own audience participation Messiah concerts with the combined talents of the Master Chorale of Orange County, the Pacific Chorale, and the Pacific Symphony.

In total, opportunities for average citizens to sing Messiah with Roger Wagner took place in the Los Angeles area from 1980 until 1987. Wagner died in 1992, but the Los Angeles Master Chorale continues to hold annual Messiah sing-along concerts to this day.

Sunday School first began in England in the 1780s as a way to provide education to children who worked throughout the week and did not have easy access to education. Today, it is typically a religious study meant for younger children attending church services. It is often a one-hour session in which bible passages are read and analyzed and traditional children's hymns such as "Jesus Loves Me" are sung. Although children study religious doctrine, Sunday School is rarely recognized as an educational institution.

Saint Valentine's Day, also known as Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is a holiday observed on February 14 each year. It is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not an official holiday in most of them. The day was first associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In eighteenth-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending hand-written cards.

“Be Rail Wise!” was a slogan that accompanied the merger of the LA County Transportation Commission (LACTC) and the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) to educate citizens on railway safety. The “Be Rail Wise!” Travel Club aimed at teaching children how to be cautious around construction sites as well as train tracks. Travis the Owl was used for this initiative to appeal to children and as a symbol that carries the message of safety to those communities that are affected by the railway program. Travis the Owl was featured in a two-part video to promote the safety campaign:

Additional Information

“Happiness is Humphrey” refers to a statement made by Democratic candidate Hubert Humphrey during his 1968 campaign against Republican candidate Richard Nixon, to whom Humphrey lost, which has been documented as "the way politics ought to be...the politics of happiness, the politics of purpose, the politics of joy." Humphrey had served as the 38th Vice President of the United States under President Lydon B. Johnson from 1965 to 1969.

The classic yellow smiley face is comprised of a yellow circle, two black dots for eyes, and a black arc ending in serifs for a mouth. It was designed in 1963 by commercial artist, Harvey Ross Ball. Ball was commissioned by The State Mutual Life Insurance Company to create a happy face to raise the morale of their employees. His version was created in 10 minutes. The design was printed onto more than 50 million buttons. Neither Ball nor the company copyrighted this smiley, so it was continually used by other businesses in their promotions.
The design and concept is quite simple and was definitely used before Ball’s 1963 version. However, his has become the most iconic. Variations have been used for advertising campaigns and in popular culture ever since.
