Des Moines is the capitol city of the state of Iowa. Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of the area. Fort Des Moines was founded in part to keep the Native Americans separated from the colonial settlers and gain control of the area for the settlers. The town of Fort Des Moines was chartered in 1853 and shorted to “Des Moines” in 1858. It became a mining town and benefited from trade with its prime location on two rivers.

It is likely that this is an artifact from a 1922 Des Moines Chamber of Commerce membership campaign that advertised Des Moines as “a central city with a central market.” Early advertising from 1920 promoted Des Moines as the distribution center of the “greatest producing section of the globe.”

Smokey was an 11 foot-tall, 7 ton African bull elephant who was housed at the Oakland Zoo in California for over 25 years. He was well-known for being one of three male elephants in North America capable of breeding and he was also known for killing one of the zoo's animal keepers in 1991. The trampling death of the zookeeper led to new methods of caring for elephants in captivity that did not require the trainers to be in direct contact with the animals. Smokey passed away in 2001 from an unknown illness.

Additional Information Plymouth, Massachusetts was the first permanent settlement of Europeans in New England. It was established by about 100 men and women looking for religious freedom in 1620. Sailing from England, in a merchant ship known as the Mayflower, took them two months on rough seas. When they arrived at Plymouth Rock, the settlers made treaties with local Native American tribes and set about farming the land and building their economy. After a brutal first winter, during which about half of the settlers died of illness, the colony grew into a self-sufficient port city.

Additional Information

Salem, Massachusetts has taken advantage of its history and association with the television show Bewitched to boost tourism. The show even filmed a series of episodes in the town. But not all residents agree with this treatment of the 17th century witchcraft trials, especially the decision to install a statue of Bewitched’s main character, played by actress Elizabeth Montgomery.

The history of the witchcraft trials is still a major tourism draw for Salem, even though it’s doubtful that any of the people convicted and executed for practicing witchcraft ever did so.
