The longest-running sporting event in the United States first started in 1875 is horse racing at the Kentucky Derby. The event was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, who was inspired by the Epsom Derby in England. Clark is a grandson of the famous explorer William Clark. Originally, it began as a jockey club meeting, but slowly grew into the large event that it is today. The Kentucky Derby takes place in Louisville and has operated without interruption, even continuing through events like The Great Depression and both World Wars.

The Kettering Medical Center was founded in 1964, although work on their first hospital took place in 1961. The organization was named for its founder, Eugene Kettering. Eugene was inspired to open up a hospital after witnessing the 1950's polio epidemic. The medical center kept growing, with the campus even opening a college for health sciences, Kettering College. Eventually, the Kettering Medical Center rebranded to become the Kettering Health Network, which lists nine hospitals across Ohio around the Dayton and Cincinnati area.

The United Church of Christ (UCC) traces its history to the Congregational Church, who’s history goes back to the Puritans. The UCC formed when the Evangelical and Reformed Church merged with the General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches in 1957. The UCC has involved itself fin traditionally liberal social justice issues including the United Farm Workers. Perhaps this cause inspired them to form the Council for Hispanic Ministries (CHM). The CHM works autonomously in concert with the UCC to be an ambassador for the faith, promote the interests of Hispanic and Latino people, and support international, intercultural, and interfaith dialogue.

Wines are finger lake'n good is a play on the phrase, “finger lickin’ good,” because of the winery’s location near Finger Lakes in New York. At the time of its establishment in 1865, Gold Seal Winery was called Urbana Wine Company. At that point, it held New York State’s second bonded winery license. During its near 120 years of business, Gold Seal Winery had many owners and many names. During Prohibition, the name was changed to Gold Seal Products Company, which produced sacramental wine. After Prohibition, the name changed back to Urbana Wine Company. They were known for their Finger Lakes champagne that used traditional European grapes that were imported from France. The name once again changed in 1957 to Gold Seal Vineyards, Inc. before closing in 1984.

United News is a publication of the United Church of God. The newsprint has been in publication since January of 2008.  The United Church of God was formed in 1995 in Indianapolis, Indiana, and has started new churches around the world. The United Church of God is considered a restorationist church, believing that many of the original teachings of the Bible have been corrupted through translation over the years and choose to opt out of many traditional holiday celebrations, such as Halloween and Christmas, for their influences from pagan and other cultures.

Starting in 1944, Dan West started Heifer International in an attempt to combat world hunger and poverty. The project was inspired by West’s experiences volunteering and feeding refugees from the Spanish Civil War. This experience made West see that giving food was not enough and hunger would still persist. The longer-term solution was to provide struggling families and communities with their own animals such as the cow or heifer. These animals can provide renewable sources of food that can lift communities out of hunger and poverty. Today, Heifer International continues outreach through programs with economic development, environmental sustainability, food security & nutrition, risk mitigation, and women's empowerment.

The United Church Board for Homeland Ministries (UBCHM) existed from 1962-2000. It was the administration group that oversaw the United Church of Christ’s home missions and services. The United Church of Christ formed in 1957 when the Evangelical and Reformed Church united with the General Council of the Congregational Christian Churches. (The latter traces its history to the Congregational Church, which itself is descended from Puritan settlers.) UBCHM combined the boards of each mission from each church into one organization. The UCC still maintains varied ministries at the national, regional, and local level. In addition, the UCC has involved itself in traditionally liberal social justice positions.
