Jimmy Carter began his presidential campaign in 1976. Carter initially embarked on a naval career, but he took over the family peanut farm upon his father’s death. He was a Georgia state senator from 1963-1967 and lost his bid to run for governor in 1966. He ran again successfully and was Governor of Georgia from 1971-1975. He decided to run for President on the Democrat ticket and had a two-pronged strategy: in the South he ran as a moderate, in the North he appealed to conservative and rural voters. He tried to hit a territory first and visited 37 states before other candidates did. After getting the party nomination, Carter went on three TV debates with President Ford and even interviewed with Playboy magazine. He won the popular vote by 2% and the Electoral College by 57 votes. Carter was the first president born in a hospital and is the only president so far to have lived in public housing.

Known as one of the U.S. Founding Fathers, George Washington became the first President of the United States in 1789, defeating John Adams who soon became his Vice President. Born February 22, 1732 to an affluent tobacco farming family in Virginia, Washington began his political career by joining the armed forces as a youth. Later on in his military career, he served in some of the U.S.' most notable wars such as the French and Indian War and American Revolutionary War. His military background is what established him as a sound leader which gained him reelection in 1793. However, after the completion of his second term, Washington declined to run again as president, and set a provision that preceding presidents cannot serve more than two terms.

Frank Sinatra played a New Year's Eve concert on December 31, 1975 at Chicago Stadium in Chicago, Illinois. The accompanying orchestra was conducted by Bill Miller. Chicago Stadium was an indoor arena that opened in 1929 and closed in 1994. The Stadium was home to the Chicago Blackhawks of the NHL from 1929 to 1994, and the NBA's Chicago Bulls from 1967 to 1994. It was the site of the first NFL payoff game in 1932, as well as both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in 1932 and 1944. Sinatra, one of the most popular musicians of the twentieth century, was nicknamed "Ol' Blue Eyes" for his deep blue eyes. The setlist for the 1975 New Year's Eve concert included the classic "Ole Man River" and covers of The Beatles' "Something" and "You are the Sunshine of my Life" by Stevie Wonder.

This illustration commemorates Children's Day, a day to honor and promote the welfare of children. It was sold by the Goodenough and Woglom Co. annual catalog for Church and Sunday School Supplies around the turn of the twentieth century. The depiction of roses refers back to the holiday's original name of Rose Day or Flower Day. The observance began in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1857 by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard, pastor of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer. Since its creation, the day of observance varies by country, the United States celebrates on the second Sunday in June.

The Chicago Auto Show which was first held in 1901, has been an annual event held in Chicago for over a century. The events features conceptual models of popular cars to show advancements and innovations that will be a mainstay on cars in the near future. Thousands flock to the event every year to see the newly unveiled vehicles.

The legend of Santa Claus can be traced as far back as the third century, to a monk named Saint Nicholas. The name Santa Claus evolved from Saint Nicholas’ Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, which is a shortened form of his Dutch name Sint Nikolaas. 

It is said that Nicholas inherited his family’s wealth after his parents died and used it to help the poor and sick. He was much admired for his generosity, goodness, and kindness and became known as the protector of children and sailors. He was the popular saint in Europe by the time of the Renaissance and even remained so after the Protestant Reformation, when the traditional veneration of saints was discouraged. It was during the later part of eighteenth century that he became a familiar figure in American popular culture, introduced by groups of Dutch immigrants. 

Saint Nicholas is now more commonly known as Santa Claus, the legendary character dressed in a white fur trimmed red jacket and pants, a matching hat, and black boots. He brings Christmas gifts to well-behaved children around the world, and coal or even nothing at all to naughty children. Nowadays, this character has a few residences around the world. It is believed in North America that Santa Claus lives at the North Pole, while each Nordic country believes that he lives within their own territory.

Rocky Jones, Space Ranger was a science fiction television program for children.  It was the first such show to be recorded on film, rather than presented on live radio.  It began in 1954 and ran for a total of 39 episodes.  The program revolved around Rocky and his space patrolmen, who blasted off from Earth in search of evildoers on distant worlds.  It was heavily merchandised, and buttons, records, and watches were marketed to promote the series. Johnston Cookies was one of the sponsors.  The final episode aired on November 16, 1954, but the show experienced a resurgence of interest in 1992, when it was referenced in episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000.

Actor James Arness played U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon, the leading character in the Western television drama Gunsmoke. The TV series was set in Dodge City, Kansas, during the settlement of the American West. John Wayne, fellow actor and friend to Arness, recommended him for the role of Dillon. Gunsmoke ran for 20 seasons from 1955 to 1975. After the show ended, Arness starred in the Western TV series How the West Was Won and performed in Western movies. Arness was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and died in 2011 at the age of 88 in Brentwood, California.

At the onset of WWI, townspeople all across the country desired to assist with the war effort.  In Kenosha, Wisconsin, a plan was implement which became known as the Kenosha Plan and their slogan was "Half-Hour a Week for War Relief." That plan proposed that all those participating would instruct their employers to deduct a half-hour’s wages from their weekly pay to be contributed to the Patriots Fund, and these dollars would then be matched by their employer.  In a town consisting of 43,000 residents, 14,000 participated which constituted nearly every household.  In one year they were able to raise over $330,000.00 for the war effort.  Other counties in Wisconsin followed suit, including Winnebago County.

This is most likely a reference to Valley Christian School (VCS), located in Huntington Valley, Pennsylvania. Their mission is to train students to become Christ-centered thinkers. In 1974, the Huntington Valley Presbyterian Church (HVPC) and a small group of parents founded VCS. It is a ministry of HVPC and operated by a School Board representing the Christian community. VCS stands as a living testament for the faithfulness of God. VCS trains students to think critically and develop a Christian mind through the power of the Holy Spirit and God's word.
