The Miss District of Columbia pageant crowns a winner who goes on to represent the D.C. area in the Miss America pageant. Women who compete in this event typically work or study in Washington, D.C., but most are not residents of the district and come from neighboring states.

In 2006, the winner of the Miss D.C. pageant was Georgia-native Kate Michael. She was twenty-four at the time of her crowning and performed a jazz routine to the song “Fever” for the talent portion. She later competed in Miss America in 2007, but lost to Lauren Nelson from Oklahoma. Today, Michael works for the Department of Employment Services and has a startup business on the side called Consignment Cocktails.

The Franklin County Fair is held in late summer months in Hampton, Iowa. The fair has hosted 4-H competitions since 1942, though the first 4-H club activity in Hampton, Iowa, dates back to 1919. These clubs were originally girls clubs which were made up of sewing, bread making, and canning clubs. Boys 4-H clubs quickly followed in 1921; focused on livestock.

In 1942, the first 4-H competition hosted at the Franklin County Fair was focused around war needs. The boys and girls clubs both raised Victory Gardens and sold stamps and war bonds. The prizes also consisted of war stamps. The following year, the 4-H clubs hosted their first food stand in an effort to raise money for both their clubs. This would become a Franklin County Fair tradition. The 4-H clubs would go on to host many food stands to raise money for different 4-H causes.

This house may be located in a coastal town in Gearhart, Oregon. A railroad was once connected between Astoria and Seaside, dating back to 1889. Astorians and Portlanders use the railroad to visit the seaside town as a pleasant place for wandering and picnicking. Over many decades, many visitors traveled to Gearhart by train for vacation, but residential growth exceeded commercial growth. To keep the beach’s natural beauty and to limit growth in town, the railroad service was discontinued. Some of the beachfront homes were passed down from generation to generation and remodeled and sold to other private parties. But Gearhart remains a beautiful place for visitors. This house may be one of the beachfront homes passed down and remodeled during Gearhart’s historical change. It is currently unknown whether this house still survives to this day.

Many high schools, primary schools, and universities in the United States have extracurricular student councils modeled after democratic governments where students will campaign for office positions such as president, vice president, secretary, and treasurer. The student body will vote on the candidates, and the elected officers of each year will complete specified or unspecified duties, such as planning school events, organizing fundraisers, and reforming school rules.

A senior student named Kevin ran for class treasurer in 2011 and aptly overlayed his face over an image of a US one-dollar bill for this campaign memorabilia.
